Bagginshield is a fairly new ship in the world of fandoms, and the rage with the mythical Middle-Earth fangirls(boys). Why is it so popular, and what caused it to expand so rapidly? The fact that the amount of fans is so immense must’ve helped

because on Tumblr and Wattpad they're the current rulers in the domain of fan art and fanfiction but apart from that. So what are the reasons bilbo and thorin seem to make such a great and cute couple?
The moments between Bilbo and Thorin in An Unexpected Journey are so intense in some scenes that you can hear the fangirls squeal with joy whenever there are times with just the two of them. Oakenshield is a grim and slightly depressed Dwarf who along with twelve others invades his host's home and presents him with the plan of reclaiming Erebor, killing Smaug the Dragon and retrieve his family’s precious title of Kings under the mountain along with the Arkenstone. Gandalf of course had a hand in this, he got the whole adventure going by contacting Thorin and making Bilbo host the dwarf party, he must’ve thought they looked cute together...
Chemistry is a very important component in a couple’s life and let’s say that sparks fly when those two are staring at one another, this tends to happen a lot with male characters in Peter Jackson movies… cough... cough.., Frodo and Sam… cough… cough… Anyhow, chemistry, the hobbit-dwarf relationship that is Bagginshield is the definition of perfect plus there are a couple of intense looks and adorable hugs whom melt my heart in the first movie.
In the Desolation of Smaug you can see Bilbo and Thorin growing closer and closer to the point, when they are apart the group doesn't seem complete or not balanced. The hobbit is a gentle soul and cares for others even if his ruffer more adventurous side is coming to show, but he still keeps his timid and conservative personality that we all know and love. Our dwarf on the other hand has come to trust his Burglar completely and has started to get a bit obsessed with the Arkenstone which means hi counterpart is constantly on his mind. When the spiders attack our little hero saves every single dwarfs but, even if afterwards the elves capture them, they escape via barrel, thank you Bilbo again, Thorin owes you.
Character development is an aspect beautifully written by Tolkien. Even here in the early 1900 you can see sparks of a gay relationship although much less obvious than in PJ’s version cough… cough... Pippin and Merry cough… cough… The films depict this also in a wonderful way, the things that Pete managed to do so that the feelings between the characters seemed so real and the bonds between them so strong and lifelike. The proof that the films managed to create real bonds is here: Richard Armitage and Martin Freeman actually became good friends while filming and still talk to each other quite often according to the actors, as told in an interview.
Later on, in the Battle of the five armies (or other amount depending on how you count) Thorin pulls himself out of dragon sickness. No one knows how, but I suspect the thought of Bilbo might of just helped him. Although Thranduil and Bard menace to kill him along with the other twelve. The dwarf never gives up the hope of being able of defeating the huge Human-Elf army even if the ratio is around 1:100. After the menacing is over and Bain shows up they realize that they are in serious trouble and they all rally up against the orcs and manage to defend themselves that is until Thorin and his nephews (Fili and Kili) get murdered by Azog and co.
The components of relationship development are as important or more as character development, at first Thorin does not trust Bilbo but after the multiple time the uncanny hobbits saves them, remains trustworthy and loyal, the dwarf, finally starts to get his head around the idea of having him around as a fully fledged member of the company. In An Unexpected Journey It’s a bit of a love hate relationship, some of the more conservative dwarfs such as Dwalin are not so sure about the new addition even though Dori, Balin and youngest Ori, Fili and Kili trust him completely. In The Desolation of Smaug Thorin starts to see Bilbo’s potential as a burglar when he goes into the dragon’s lair and does not come back charbroiled. Following that in The Battle Of The Five Armies their relationship is at a peek except when the dragon sickness occurs Bilbo cries like hell when he finds Thorin bleeding and letting out his last breath here I find is when the true nature of their friendship.
Throughout the trilogy, you can see a strong bond form between the two of them, it’s based confidence and the amount of times one saves the others life. The beautiful love/friendship that forms in the second movie is so strong and seems so real, but it is only to be shattered by dragon sickness which whom completely takes over the leader’s mind and drives him to commit stupidities such as, pissoff Thranduil, no one messes with this guy’s eyebrows or jewelry for that matter. The battle of the five armies is an awe inspiring unveiling of the links between races truthness of heart than be achieved thanks to friendship and others being for you. If you are not convinced then… I give up, my ship is as canon as it can be and nothing will change this in my hearts of hearts.
